Summer of My German Soldier by Bette Greene. My Photo: Name: Amanda: Location: United States. Patty is a Jewish girl of the early 1940s living in. In honor of Memorial Day this week, we are recommending Bette Greene's Summer of My German Soldier. In “Summer of My German Soldier” by Bette Greene, we meet thirteen-year-old Patty Bergen. As you can tell, I love to read! Minutes before the train pulled into the station in Jenkinsville, Arkansas, Patty Bergen knew something exciting was going to happen. Taking place during World War II, the novel Summer of My German Soldier by Bette Greene, shows the relationship between a Jewish girl and a German soldier. Patty Bergen does not have what you would call a happy home life. Abused by her father, Patty struggles to find her way through the world, and often resorts to telling lies. Goal for 2011 was also 150, sadly I only reached 138. The most obvious being that SUMMER OF MY GERMAN SOLDIER's setting is a small Arkansas town which housed German prisoners during WWII. Spy Island " has the runaway German soldier theme like in "Summer of My German Soldier", an exotic setting like in "Nim's Island ", and spy thriller elements like a Ken Follett novel such as "Hornet Flight". But she never could have imagined that her summer would be so memorable. I picked up Summer of My German Soldier because I wanted to read its sequel, Morning is a Long Time Coming, which comes highly recommended by my book pusher friend Angie.
